ASC Takes Over West Indies Cricket!
Former ASC guests Stuart Law and Joel Garner appointed Head Coach and Team Manager of the West Indies respectively. The quality of the Australian Sports Camps coaching program continues to be shown at the highest levels of international cricket with the appointment of Stuart Law as Head Coach and Joel Garner as Team Manager of the West Indies. Many participants enjoyed working with Joel Garner in the early 1990’s as he spent some time with Australian Sports Camps. In this video from 1992/1993, found deep in the ASC vault, he can be seen here with ASC at Bendigo.
Joel Garner & ASC 1992/1993
You could arguably count on one hand the amount of fast bowlers of his calibre. Only strike partner Malcolm Marshall has a better bowling average (20.94) than his own (20.97) for those who have taken 200 wickets or more in Test Cricket. His average of 18.84 in One Day Internationals remains the best of all time! for those who have bowled 1000 balls or more. His prowess in the short form of the game was most notably demonstrated in his 5/38 demolition of England. Notably, in the 1979 World Cup Final, which remains the best figures achieved in the showpiece of cricket. Stuart Law’s appointment to guide the West Indies continues his long-term successful career as player and coach. In addition a test and 54 ODI’s for Australia to his name, he was a magnificent player at domestic level with 40,089 runs including 100 tons. He was also a handy option with the ball as well, capturing 175 wickets including a couple of five-wicket hauls. After years of captaincy (including overseeing Queensland’s maiden Sheffield Shield triumph after a long drought), Law turned to coaching gaining high-profile roles for Sri Lanka (interim), Bangladesh, Australia (Batting, Under 19’s), CA Centre of Excellence and the Queensland Bulls/Brisbane Heat. Law is a past guest of ASC where he coached on a daily basis alongside Australian players! including; Andy Bichel and Michael Kasprowicz at the Carl Rackemann Cricket Camp in Queensland. We wish both well in their new roles in the West Indies as they look to gain success for the Caribbean nations.
